Myself and husband will be travelling overseas on the 21st Feb. We are goiing to Singapore, Maldives & Dubai. I am unsure if we need to have any travel vaccinations for these destinations. Neither of us have travelled before, so we have never been vaccinated.
The short answer is that all travellers need to consider health risks, and ideally seek professional advice about what risk-avoidance measures are relevant for their travel... More..
I will be travelling to China in two weeks time for a month. I have been advised that an influenza jab is recommended but I understand that the flu strain in China may vary from year to year. Can I get the latest flu strain vaccination here before I go?

We are travelling to Kota Kinubalu in March, and will be flying to Sandakan to the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre and may do some other tours in the tourist zones. We are staying in a 5 star resort, are both extremely fussy eaters so will most definitely not be eating anything off the street markets. When we went to our GP regarding vaccinations we left with scripts for Twinrix (Hep A&B) requiring 3 doses, Adacel (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) and also Typhoid, for all of these we are looking at close to $500 each! I was just wondering if all of these were absolutely necessary as I have spoken with my travel agent who has said that so long as we have our tetanus up to date, take Imodium over with us in case and take lot's of hand sanitiser we should be fine. Your help greatly appreciated.

Hello, I will be travelling throughout Asia soon and no matter how careful I seem to be I always get nausea/vomiting & diahorea, what can I take with me for treatment and prevention of this. Prescription medication has too many side effects and I don’t like to take them. Is there an alternative I can use.

Hi, We are getting differing opinions from Health Professionals on immunisations for travelling to Phuket – and now we are confused more than ever. We do not consider that we will be doing anything extraordinary to many other travellers. We understand the need to protect ourselves against mosquitos, not to touch animals, do not swim in fresh water and eat from mainstream eateries. We may do the elephant ride or quad bike tour into the local jungle. My wife and 7 year old daughter have had a GP consult, who prescribed Twinrix 360/10 (is this for adults?) and Typhoid vaccine for my wife and my 7 year old was prescribed just Havrix Junior 720 (no typhoid). My own separate GP consult suggested no vaccinations for anyone and said he would not immunise himself if he was going. So I have nothing! Your assistance to clarify would be appreciated.
This is a common problem where travellers get advice from different GPs, and is caused by the fact that some GPs don’t know much about Travel Medicine, and are not really sure about managing risks of specific travellers... More..
Hi. My husband and my son who is 12 months and 3 weeks are going to colombia for holidays. My son was born in Australia and has all the vaccinations required in here.I was wondering if he needs special vaccinations for this trip. As we come from Colombia we know the safe places where to go regarding hygienic aspects. We will be in the capital city only, sharing with friends and family. I wouldn't like to overdo in his vaccinations if they are not really needed. I know usually we need yellow fever (my husband and I have that one already and tuberculosis as well).

We are going to Vietnam on a two week organized tour this November, visiting Saigon, Hue, Hoi An, Halong Bay, Hanoi and Sapa. Our GP has recommended we take Dukoral for cholera and Doryx for malaria prevention. We're in two minds as to whether to take them as Dukoral is very expensive, and I don't really want to take Doryx as I suffer from chronic thrush which I have only just got under control after many months of treatment. How necessary do you consider Dukoral and Doryx if doing a trip such as ours? I wonder if our GP is being overly cautious.
Indeed, generally anti-malarials are not usually recommended for that itinerary, and in general oral cholera vaccine off is not used as routine for travellers, as cholera is not a likely travellers disease... More..

Hi, Can you provide some advice for us regarding camel bites. My girlfriend was bitten on the upper thigh during a camel ride in Egypt. The bite was about hand size and the immediate area is now purple/ massive bruising, there is a small area that the skin was broken, no blood was lost, but it has been drawn to the surface of the skin.
Are there any documented complications from such bites?
Are there any diseases of viruses that could have been transferred?
Are there any other issues that we should be worried about?
Camel bites most often cause extensive bruising which can take a week or two to settle. Camel bites often get infected if the skin is broken as bacterial contamination is heavy in camel saliva... More..

We are off to Bali June 1st for 14 days. I have 4 children aged 7, 4 , 3 and 1. They haven't had any vaccinations. This was a conscientious objection. I also wasn't planning any overseas travel for quite some time, However this trip has now come up and I guess with Bali's hygiene and health differences compared to Australia I am a little more concerned. Should I book in for any particular vaccination? Eg tetanus shot, or have I left it too late? Having said all this we will be staying in a well known hotel in Nusa dua (Novotel) for 6 days before heading off to a villa near Cangu beach. I am also aware of drinking only bottled water, including no ice, and brushing teeth with bottled water.
The problem for all your children is that you have left them with no immunity against diseases that are common overseas and used to be common in Australia until we started vaccinating babies... More..

Would altitude sickness be a problem? Do I continue to take the Amlo at high altitude? We are careful with the Yellow fever vaccine, as it is associated rarely with allergic reactions in people who are very allergic to eggs (if major anaphylactic reactions only), just like the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine which also is a live vaccine associated with rare allergic reactions. If a person can eat eggs, or foods with eggs (cakes, etc), they will have no problem with getting the vaccine, or if they have had the MMR vaccine before, they should have no problem.

DEET (diethyltoluamide) is the active ingredient in many quality insect repellents, eg Repel, Rid, etc, and is very important to help avoid mosquito bites, and other insects, in the tropics.
