Ask The Travel Doctor-TMVC

Q: We are travelling to Tanna Island in Vanuatu. We are staying at remote bungalows. The hosts of our accommodation have said the water comes from a well in the village and is clean and safe to drink. Is water from a village well safe or should we still treat the water in some way?

Sharon

A:  We would not suggest drinking village well water directly without some kind of treatment, eg boiling or treating first. While this might seem rude to your hosts, they have some local immunity against contaminants, you do not, so you just need to be diplomatic about choosing tea ( water gets boiled) rather than straight water.
