Ask The Travel Doctor-TMVC

Q: I will be travelling with my family to Ho Chi Min city and Nah Trang for 10 days in Jan. We all have our normal vaccinations that are up to date. What other ones will we need? As we have children who live in other cities organizing these will be logistically challenging. What ones do we need to have?

Leith, Darwin

A:  Vietnam is a great family holiday destination but some travel vaccines are advised in addition to the "routine" vaccines which of course now includes pandemic influenza vaccine. Minimum requirement is vaccination against hepatitis-A, which is a common food and water disease and all travellers to Vietnam should be protected against. Depending on the style of your trip and your activities you do, you may need typhoid vaccine (a food-borne disease) which can be combined with hepatitis-A, and even consideration of rabies vaccine if high risk exposure is likely. Japanese encephalitis vaccine is occasionally indicated for short stays in the endemic zones. A detailed risk assessment, and consideration of malaria risk is done at the consultation. Because Travel Doctor is a national company with clinics in all major cities, your family can get consistent and up-to-date information and service.
