Ask The Travel Doctor-TMVC

Q: Hi , I am planning to take 16 students to West Timor in November. Are there any vaccines required or suggested?

Regards, Debra

A:  Yes, West Timor is part of Indonesia that is less developed than the common tourist areas. A number of infectious diseases are present there, and the usual hepatitis-A and typhoid protection will be required, and depending how long the trip is, consideration is required of rabies and Japanese encephalitis vaccines. Malaria is an issue in rural areas.

Importantly for school groups, getting consistent advice for the group, but tailored for any one individual , will assist you manage the expectations and worries of students and parents. A visit to Travel Doctor in the Perth CBD or in Fremantle is the best solution to establish a comprehensive risk-management solution without unnecessary vaccines and costs.
